This talk will trace the remarkable transformation of French landscape painting over the course of the nineteenth century, from a minor genre rooted in classical tradition to, ultimately, a primary vehicle for artistic experimentation. Considering both the impact of the writings of Neoclassical artist Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes and the first Paris viewing of John Constable’s radical canvases, Barganier will also address how social change and technological advances fueled subsequent generations to increasingly take their work out-of-doors, paving the way for the startling freshness and innovation that characterized the canvases of Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet.
