Vishnu is one of the most important deities in the Hindu tradition, and artistic renditions of his mythological feats and his royal demeanor are ubiquitous across the subcontinent. This talk traces the trajectory of this deity from our earliest description of Vishnu's “three strides” in the Ṛgveda to his pan-Hindu role as a divine king, protector of worldly and cosmic law (dharma). Special attention will be given to the iconography of the Kimbell’s Chola-period bronze Vishnu.
These lectures, part of a continuing series, introduce the permanent collection and selected exhibitions on view at the Kimbell.
