Portrait of Jacob Obrecht: A New Attribution to Quentin Metsys

Rafael Barrientos Martinez, PhD student, University of California, Los Angeles

The Kimbell’s Portrait of Jacob Obrecht has long eluded identification. For decades, art historians proposed various attributions for the work, including its linkage to the Bruges-based painter Hans Memling. Rafael Barrientos will discuss its recent identification as the earliest known picture by Quinten Metsys, establishing a new benchmark against which other works by this Antwerp-based master can now be compared. The talk will analyze this project of connoisseurship, embracing the disciplines of art history and conservation in the new digital age.
