Sculpture Conservation in Action: Bernini’s "Modello for the Fountain of the Moor"

Tony Sigel, senior conservator of objects and sculpture, Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Sculpture conservator Tony Sigel will describe the conservation treatment of Bernini’s magnificent terracotta Modello for the Fountain of the Moor. The almost year-long process, which involved the disassembly of the damaged sculpture and removal of centuries of grime and poorly executed earlier restorations, led to revelations about the 400-year life of the sculpture and the methods Bernini employed to create it.
