Guan (“official”) ware was made at the Jiantan or “Altar of Heaven” kilns, southwest of Hangzhou. This factory produced ceramic wares for the Southern Song imperial court which were highly prized. This Song vase is notable for its graceful shape and the remarkable depth of its finely crackled glaze.
