This beautifully illustrated book focuses on Matisse’s development as both a sculptor and painter during the first half of the twentieth century. Matisse often turned to sculpture when he encountered difficulties or when he faced a new challenge in his painting. His sculpture helped to clarify his pictorial style and also contributed significantly to the development of modern sculpture.
